Quick Overview
This story is told through the eyes of two friends of the writer. They emigrated from Barbados, one in the fifties, the other in the sixties. Paving the way for the latter, President Lyndon B. Johnson had just opened the doors a bit wider with the Immigration Act of 1965. These characters are real people. Their names are fictitious. Their stories are told with echoes of America’s good and America’s failings, of subtle and not so subtle racism and job and housing discrimination in those early years but also of the opportunities and the good fortune that awaited those who persevered in a land of multiple cultures so different from their own. ”The Lure of America” encapsulates their two separate journeys and suggests that while America has grown between those years, in some ways America has remained the same.
