Some months ago I began, in an amateurish sort of way making a collection of words and phrases in use in our local dialect with the idea of compiling a glossary. I very soon became aware that the accomplishment of this purpose demanded far more time and research than were at my disposal, a far wider knowledge of the historical background of the island than I possess – in a word, far more than the amateur approach.
